How to Raise Larvae

Everything you need to know about raising beetle larvae (grubs) from egg to adult. Covers substrate, feeding, temperature, container sizes, and the pupation process for stag, rhino, and flower beetles.

Understanding Beetle Larvae

Beetle larvae (also called grubs) look like white or cream-colored C-shaped worms. All beetle larvae go through 3 stages called instars: L1 (tiny, just hatched), L2 (medium), and L3 (large, final stage before pupation). The larval stage is when the beetle does all its growing — the size of the adult is entirely determined by how well you raise the larva.

Key Principles (All Types)

Important

Never use pine, cedar, or conifer-based wood products for larvae. These contain natural oils (terpenes) that are toxic to beetle larvae. Always use hardwood-based substrates — oak, beech, maple, or similar deciduous trees.

Stag Beetle Larvae

What They Eat

Stag beetle larvae are wood eaters. In nature, they live inside and eat decaying hardwood. In captivity, you feed them flake soil (fermented hardwood sawdust) — this is the #1 most important supply for raising stag beetles.

What is Flake Soil?
Flake soil (also called "kunekune mat" in Japanese hobby) is hardwood sawdust that has been fermented by bacteria over several months. This breaks down the wood fibers and makes the nutrients accessible to larvae. You can buy it ready-made or make your own (but making it takes 3-6 months). Good flake soil is dark brown, smells earthy (not sour), and has a soft, fluffy texture.

Substrate Changes

Replace the substrate when it turns into fine, dark frass (larva poop) — usually every 2-3 months. You'll notice the substrate changes from fluffy brown to grainy dark brown/black. When more than 70% looks like frass, it's time to change.

  1. Prepare new flake soil in the container (moisten it — squeeze test: a few drops when squeezed)
  2. Gently dig out the larva from the old substrate
  3. Make a small hole in the new substrate and place the larva in
  4. The larva will burrow down on its own — don't push it in

Temperature Guide

Stag beetles generally prefer cooler temperatures than rhino or flower beetles. Keeping larvae at the lower end of the safe range (while still within species requirements) tends to produce larger adults — but it also means a longer larval period.

Phalacrognathus (Rainbow Stag)
22-25°C is ideal. Can tolerate 20-27°C. Larval period: 6-10 months. Use high-quality flake soil. Males can reach 50-65mm with good care. This species is a substrate layer — larvae do best in fine-particle flake soil rather than inside wood.
Dorcus (Large Stags)
20-24°C is ideal. Dorcus titanus larvae can take 8-18 months depending on temperature. Males can exceed 80mm with premium flake soil and low temperatures. Some Dorcus also accept kinshi (mushroom bottle substrate) which can produce even larger adults.
Pro Tip — Kinshi Bottles

For advanced stag beetle rearing, "kinshi" (mushroom mycelium substrate in bottles) can produce larger adults than regular flake soil. The mycelium pre-digests the wood, making nutrients even more available. However, kinshi is more expensive and less forgiving — it can go bad if temperature is too high. Stick with flake soil if you're a beginner.

Pupation

When the L3 larva is ready to pupate, it stops eating, shrinks slightly, and turns yellowish. It will build a pupal cell — a smooth, oval chamber in the substrate. This is critical: do NOT disturb a larva that is building or inside a pupal cell.

Warning — Pupal Cell

If you accidentally break a pupal cell, you need to make an artificial one immediately. Use a piece of wet floral foam (oasis) and carve an oval chamber slightly larger than the pupa. Place the pupa inside gently. Without a pupal cell, the beetle may emerge deformed.

Rhino Beetle Larvae

What They Eat

Rhino beetle larvae eat decomposed organic matter — primarily leaf mulch, compost, and fermented wood. They are less picky than stag beetle larvae and will eat a wider range of substrates. A good mix is flake soil + leaf litter compost + organic soil.

Container Sizes

Rhino beetle larvae grow much larger than stag beetle larvae — some species (Dynastes, Megasoma) produce larvae that weigh over 100 grams. They need significantly bigger containers.

Substrate Recipe

A proven substrate mix for rhino beetle larvae:

Mix well and moisten to the squeeze test level. Some breeders add crushed dried leaves on top as extra food.

Substrate Changes

Rhino beetle larvae produce a lot of frass because they eat a lot. Change substrate every 2-3 months or whenever more than 60% has turned to frass. For large species in the final L3 stage, you may need to change more frequently.

Japanese Rhino Beetle (Allomyrina / Trypoxylus)
One of the easiest rhino beetles to raise. Larval period: 8-12 months. Accepts a wide range of substrates including basic compost. Keep at 20-25°C. Great beginner species for rhino beetles.
Dynastes hercules
The king of rhino beetles. Larval period: 12-24 months (males often take longer). L3 larvae can weigh 100-130g. Need very large containers (10-16L) and lots of high-quality substrate. Keep at 20-24°C for best results. Higher temperatures speed development but may reduce adult size.

Pupation

Rhino beetle larvae build large pupal cells deep in the substrate. For large species, the pupal cell can be the size of a fist or larger. The larva uses its own frass mixed with substrate to build a hard-walled chamber.

Warning

Large rhino beetle larvae need enough substrate depth to build their pupal cell. If the container is too small or shallow, the larva may fail to pupate properly or build a deformed cell, resulting in a deformed adult. For Dynastes hercules, ensure at least 20cm substrate depth for pupation.

Flower Beetle Larvae

What They Eat

Flower beetle larvae (Cetoniinae) eat a mix of flake soil and leaf litter, similar to rhino beetles but they tend to prefer finer-textured substrate. Many species also accept plain compost. They are the least picky of all three beetle types.

Container Sizes

Flower beetle larvae are smaller than stag or rhino larvae, and many species can be raised communally (multiple larvae in one container) without cannibalism issues.

Substrate Recipe

Some breeders add protein supplements for large flower beetle species — dog food pellets (crushed) or fish flakes mixed into the substrate can boost larval growth, especially for Goliathus and Mecynorrhina larvae.

Protein Supplement for Large Flower Beetles
Goliathus, Mecynorrhina, and some other large Cetoniinae larvae benefit from added protein. Mix a small amount of crushed high-protein dog food or fish flakes into the substrate — about 1-2 tablespoons per liter of substrate. This mimics the animal protein they would encounter in wild compost heaps. Do NOT overdo it — too much protein causes mold and bacteria.

Communal Rearing

Unlike stag beetles, most flower beetle larvae can be raised together without fighting or cannibalism. This makes them much easier to manage in large numbers.

Pupation

Flower beetle larvae build a special pupal cell called a cocoon — they use substrate particles mixed with a secretion to create a hard, round shell. This cocoon is much tougher than stag or rhino beetle pupal cells.

Tip

If you find cocoons while changing substrate, do NOT break them open. Move them carefully to a separate container lined with moist substrate. The beetle will emerge on its own in 4-8 weeks. You can gently shake the cocoon near your ear — if you hear movement inside, the beetle is almost ready.

Common Problems & Solutions

Larva Stopped Eating / Turned Yellow
This is normal! The larva is entering the pre-pupa stage. It will stop eating, shrink slightly, and turn yellowish. Do NOT change substrate or disturb it. It's preparing to build its pupal cell. Leave it alone.
Mold on Substrate
Small patches of white mold are usually harmless — larvae often eat it. Green or black mold is a problem. If you see a lot of mold: (1) reduce moisture, (2) improve ventilation, (3) change substrate if it's severe. Avoid overly wet conditions.
Mites on Larvae
Small white or brown mites can appear in substrate. A few mites are normal and usually harmless. If there's a mite explosion: (1) change substrate completely, (2) gently wipe visible mites off the larva with a soft brush or damp cloth, (3) reduce fruit/food scraps in the container (mites feed on rotting food). Do NOT use pesticides.
Larva on Surface / Crawling Out
If a larva keeps coming to the surface, something is wrong with the substrate: (1) substrate may be too hot (fermentation), (2) too wet, (3) too old/exhausted, or (4) contaminated. Change the substrate immediately and ensure proper temperature and moisture.
Deformed Adult After Pupation
Usually caused by a damaged or too-small pupal cell. Prevention: use large enough containers, don't disturb pre-pupa or pupa larvae, and maintain stable humidity. If you accidentally break a pupal cell, make an artificial one from floral foam (see stag beetle pupation section above).

Final Advice

The #1 factor for growing large, healthy beetles is substrate quality. Invest in good flake soil, change it regularly, keep temperature stable, and don't disturb larvae unnecessarily. The larval stage is where all the magic happens — a well-raised larva becomes a spectacular adult.
