Breeding Methods

How to maintain stable bloodlines with minimal inbreeding effects. Learn line breeding and round breeding — two proven methods used by professional beetle breeders.

1. Breeding Terminology

Before learning breeding methods, you need to understand these key terms:

Inbreeding
Mating a male and female from the same parents. Stabilizes traits but increases genetic problems.
Crossbreeding
Mating a male and female from different bloodlines. Adds genetic diversity.
CB
Captive Bred — beetles bred in captivity (not wild).
WD
Wild Caught — beetles collected directly from the wild.
CBF1
Captive Bred F1 — first generation born in captivity. CBF2 = second gen, etc.
WF1
Wild F1 — first generation offspring from wild-caught parents.
Generation Reset Rule
When you crossbreed a WF or WD beetle with a different bloodline, the offspring resets to CBF1. You've created a new mixed bloodline — a new captive-bred line starts from that point.

2. Line Breeding

Line breeding keeps your bloodline stable while avoiding direct inbreeding (brother × sister). The idea: start with one male and multiple females, then rotate males between groups every generation.

Why This Works

Groups are never directly inbred (brother × sister), so the bloodline stays healthier. But since they all started from the same male, traits stay stable. Blood slowly gets closer over generations — much slower than direct inbreeding. Technically stays CBF1, but some breeders count CBF2+ when mating within related lines.

More Groups = Slower Blood Closing
Starting with more females (4, 5, or 6) creates more groups, so the blood takes longer to become close. But requires more work and space. 3 groups is the standard starting point.

3. Round Breeding

Round breeding uses two original stable bloodlines (Line A and Line B) and rotates crossbreeding with them across generations. This keeps genetics strong while developing the traits you want.

Requirement

Line A and Line B must be very stable bloodlines. You must keep producing A and B throughout the entire process (using line breeding or buying from a breeder). They are your permanent foundation stock.

What's Happening

C and D are "weighted" — one bloodline is heavier (~70/30). Offspring won't look hugely different, but the traits you want from A or B show up more. Group E keeps the balanced mix. This also reveals which traits are dominant vs. recessive.

Why Swap?
The closer to 50/50 the stronger the offspring (hybrid vigor). But you're NOT inbreeding — each generation adds fresh genetics from original lines. Blood is related but far from close.

Cross any group with Line A or B to weight traits

💡 Core Idea of Round Breeding
Always keep your original Lines A and B alive and producing.

Every generation, swap which original line you cross with:
Used A last time? → Use B this time.
Used B last time? → Use A this time.

This creates offspring that are always related but never too close — giving you stable traits with strong genetics.
Pro Tip

Round breeding also helps you learn about dominant and recessive genes. By crossing weighted groups (70/30) with the opposite line, you can observe which traits persist and which disappear — revealing the genetic structure of your bloodline.

Line Breeding vs. Round Breeding

When to Use Each Method
Line Breeding — simpler, good for maintaining one bloodline. Best when you have a single high-quality line you want to keep pure. Requires less space and fewer beetles.

Round Breeding — more complex but more powerful. Best when you want to develop new traits while keeping genetics strong. Requires two stable original lines and more groups. Used by advanced breeders developing rare color morphs.
